Daily Intention Setting: Day 29

January 29

“Today I will believe that good things can still happen.”

I really like Sah D’Simone’s description of hope: “. . . a hope that is spacious, creative, and deeply alive. Hope is not about toxic positivity. It’s not pretending that everything’s ok. It’s the quiet courage to stay open – to trust that there is more to this moment than what we can see right now.” Kinda sounds a little like faith – believing that the bigger picture is out there and will show itself to us when the time is right. Or, you know, when we can pause in the middle of the chaos long enough to listen and pay attention . . .

He also says that to be hopeful is not to “bypass” what’s really going on in our lives but rather to expand our view of reality. Once we find hope again, we open ourselves up to endless possibilities. He encourages us to ask, “What else is here? What am I not seeing?”

He then leads us through an exercise during which we inhale deeply, outstretching our arms, opening our palms to the sky, and turning our eyes to the heavens. We hold there for a moment and ask what is here and what we’re not seeing. Then finally we exhale fully as we wrap our arms around our shoulders, hugging ourselves. (Truth: this part didn’t really float my boat. It’s not something that I need to do in order to connect with myself or the universe. But if it works for you – go for it.)

His closing words, though, are a great reminder to keep hope alive. He says that if we find ourselves slipping into patterns of negativity then pause for a moment. Breathe. Remember that it’s ok that you don’t know how things will turn out, that you don’t have all the answers, but to have hope/faith/trust that there is more out there for us.

Good things will happen.
